Ode to Moss

This is a simple ode about the moss in my backyard. ( For complete background information, look under the "Poetry" page on the side). I hope you enjoy it.

Ode to Moss

Out by the edge
of the trees
the sun rarely shines.
The dim glow
of mellow green reflects
the fragrant lilac
bushes above. The tiny
tendrils of grass, supple
under the toes
Of those who tread
upon the sacred spot,
unite in a spongy
mass.

Willow trees bow down
to its softness-
like the belly
of a kitten
after a long-day’s nap.
The spongy bed
waits for the sun
enjoying the stillness
of a gentle breeze.
Moss thrives
in the cool shadows of the
moon.

Candles for Her

For this poem I took a phrase (the candles shed their tears on the table) and wrote a paragraph about it. Then I broke the sentences apart and put it in poem form and changed a few things so it flows nicely. I imagine a man in a small home, almost like a cottage, all alone on a rainy night. It's kind of sad, but I like this poem because of the emotion that I've attempted to portray.

Candles for Her
The polished table mirrored
crackling flame of the small fire.
Five candles rested gently
shedding their tears onto the dark table.
Tears mimicking the man sitting
at the table with head in hands,
shoulders convulsing with grief.
A broken picture frame held a small girl
on the man’s younger shoulders.
Glass shards glimmered at the edge
of the room from the metal frame
beneath the crack in the wall.
All fell apart
and all maintained this love
from the man to his daughter.

Writing Contests: so on and so forth...

I am determined to enter a writing contest sponsored by Writer's Digest. It is due 10 November 2011, so I will be posting the piece I want to enter, along with other pieces I want to eventually publish.  Of course I will also be attempting to enter other competitions (there are a couple by Writer's Journal I would like to enter some poetry in....despite the fact that I prefer prose, but expanding my writing horizions is always a good thing).

So: all-in-all: I will be posting pieces I've written and probably post random things I think about during the day (prepare yourself for those).
